Is pipetting technique affecting your results?
Pipetting appears to be as easy as pushing a button, but the way you pipette impacts the accuracy and precision of liquid transfer, which in turn affects the quality of your data. Training can help...
Pipette training and assessment can make a difference
Whether you work in a regulated environment and need to demonstrate pipette operator proficiency, are responsible for quality assurance, or simply want to ensure that your lab generates reliable, reproducible data, training lab personnel on proper pipetting technique and regularly testing their pipetting competency are important activities. But it can also be time-consuming, especially if you don’t already have a program in place.
With ready-to-download resources, pipette competency assessment products, and training seminars and services, Artel can help you get a pipette training and assessment program in place that best meets your lab and organization’s needs.

Schedule pipette training
Perfect for busy labs that want to improve overall data quality, our on-site training sessions are the easiest way to bring pipette training into your lab. At each session, one of our specialists spends the day at your organization providing guidance and hands-on training in pipette mechanics, the causes of pipette failure, ergonomic risk factors and sources of stress, and how to standardize pipette technique across your organization. You will also get pipetting performance assessment and recommendations on how to improve technique.
Attend a pipette quality management seminar
Get practical, in-depth guidance on pipetting technique, repair and maintenance, calibration, regulations and compliance, setting up a quality assurance program, and more with our two-day Pipette Quality Management Certification seminar. Held at Artel’s headquarters in Maine, the seminar is designed for laboratory personnel who use pipettes daily and need to manage regulatory compliance, improve internal processes for pipette management, or establish an internal pipette quality assurance program.
Create your own training program with Artel resources
If you’d like to build your own pipette training program or brush up on your pipetting technique knowledge, take a look at our resources section. We have articles and downloadable PDFs on pipetting techniques as well as general liquid handling best practices. You can start with our Manual Pipetting Best Practices Wall Poster for a quick overview and then turn to our Lab Reports eBook and online resources for more in-depth discussions.
Assess pipetting competency in regulated environments
While being a good pipette operator is important for researchers in most life science labs, demonstrating pipetting training and/or competency is a must for labs that need to meet regulatory requirements (Table 1). Compliance typically involves recording pipetting performance manually on a spreadsheet and keeping the documentation handy for auditors, which is not difficult but can be time-consuming.
At Artel, we’ve simplified this process with the Self-assessment module on our PCS® Pipette Calibration System. With the Self-assessment module, most of the steps involved in demonstrating pipetting competency are automated and easy to follow and there’s no need to manually record data into a spreadsheet. And for labs that need the PCS to be fully compliant with FDA regulations on electronic data handling as described in Title 21 of the CFR, part 11, we’ve built an add-on module that enables a full audit trail and electronic signatures for all tests.
Assess pipetting competency for general quality assurance
Because pipetting technique can affect the accuracy and precision of liquid transfer and, thus, the accuracy and precision of your results, assessing pipetting performance is an important and often overlooked way to improve data quality. But in just a few minutes per person, you can determine accuracy and precision of volume transfers and adjust pipetting technique as needed with the PCS® Pipette Calibration System (for use with single-channel pipettes) or the MVS® Multichannel Verification System (for use with both single- and multi-channel pipettes).
